What is DPI?

DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. It measures how many individual dots of ink a printer places within a one-inch line. The higher the DPI, the more detail your printed image will have.

For digital images, DPI is a metadata value that tells printers and other devices how to interpret the pixel dimensions of your image. It doesn't change the actual pixels — only the intended physical size.

Think of it this way: a 3000×2000 pixel image can print at 10"×6.67" at 300 DPI, or 41.67"×27.78" at 72 DPI. The pixels stay the same — only the print size changes.

DPI vs PPI: What's the Difference?

DPI (Dots Per Inch) refers to physical prints — how many ink dots a printer produces per inch.

PPI (Pixels Per Inch) refers to screens — how many pixels are displayed per inch on a monitor.

In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably for digital images. Both describe the relationship between pixel count and physical dimensions. For screen display, only pixel dimensions matter. For printing, DPI determines the output size.

How to Change DPI of an Image

Method 2: Adobe Photoshop
Open your image, go to Image → Image Size, uncheck "Resample", and enter your desired DPI. This changes the metadata without affecting pixels.

Open your image, go to Image → Print Size, and enter the desired DPI value. GIMP will adjust the print dimensions accordingly.

Method 4: Command Line
Use ImageMagick: convert input.jpg -density 300 output.jpg

Common DPI Mistakes

Mistake: Changing DPI to "improve" quality

Changing DPI metadata doesn't add pixels to your image. A 72 DPI image saved at 300 DPI is still the same low-resolution image — it just prints smaller.

Mistake: Using 72 DPI for print

72 DPI is for screens only. Printed at 72 DPI, most images will look pixelated and blurry. Use at least 150 DPI for draft prints and 300 DPI for quality prints.

Mistake: Checking DPI in MS Paint

MS Paint shows your monitor's DPI setting, not the DPI embedded in the image. Use Properties → Details on Windows or Preview → Inspector on Mac instead.
